USLHS, USLSS and NMLBS Pennants

Our first Congress of the U.S. passed the 9th Act of Congress, which was approved by President George Washington on August 7, 1789 laying the foundation for the U.S. Lighthouse Service (USLHS) by providing all expenses necessary to support, maintain and repair all lighthouses. 1939 marked the 150th anniversary of the Lighthouse Service, and a bill was passed making the week of August 7, "lighthouse week".

In 1845 the US government established the Life-Saving Service (USLSS) agency to save the lives of shipwrecked mariners and passengers. The USLSS merged with the Revenue Cutter Service in 1915 to form the Coast Guard. The Lighthouse Service Bureau merged in 1939 with the U.S. Coast Guard, which is now responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of all lighthouses and lightvessels.

The National Motor Lifeboat School (NMLBS) was established in 1968 at Station Cape Disappointment. Which specializes in training Coast Guard personnel on the operation and maintenance of Motor Lifeboats (MLBs). The school is also known for its hands-on training in challenging rough-weather environments.
