Florida was colonized by France between 1562 and 1565. The French colonial endeavor was facilitated by Huguenots attempting to escape religious persecution. The first landing in Florida was made by Jean Ribault. Soon to follow was Renew Goulaine de Laudonniere. Laudonniere would make another visit to Florida in 1564 establishing Fort Caroline, in what is now Jacksonville. The French establishment was wiped out by Spanish forces in 1565. All Huguenots were killed in the capture of Fort Caroline and the subsequent massacre that followed at Matanzas Inlet. With the help of the Saturiwa Indians, Dominique de Gourgue explored the area further and massacred the Spanish garrison in retaliation. Unfortunately, the French would never establish another outpost in Florida again.
