Commodore Perry Flag "Don't Give Up the Ship"

The Commodore Perry flag is better known as a naval historical flag. During the War of 1812 Captain James Lawrence of the US frigate Chesapeake encouraged his men by uttering the words "Don't Give Up the Ship" as he lay dying. Three months later the flag was flown by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry at the legendary Battle of Lake Erie. Commodore Perry emblazoned these words "Don't Give Up the Ship" on a flag which carried him to victory. Commodore Perry's flagship, the USS Lawrence, bore the Captains name, flue the flag with great pride. Though the USS Lawrence was claimed in the fight, Commodore Perry brought the flag with him as he left the sinking ship and raised it again on the USS Niagara. With the flag flying and against the odds, he defeated the entire British squadron, which had him outgunned. Similar flags and mottoes have inspired Americans throughout the last two centuries.
